Tall and strong, there he stood,
Beside the forge, tongs in hand,
As flames belched below the hood,
Softening by heat the iron band
That was to become a shoe, good
For the horse waiting in the stand.
As the color changed from red to white,
The smithy plucked the iron out,
Clamped in tongs and held tight
Then placed on anvil and turned about
For hammer to shape both left and right
Ends of the loop, fit but stout.
As he worked, so he lived a life apart,
Strong and firm, he was nature’s man.
Beneath that hardiness was tender heart,
Waiting for maiden fair, the flame to fan.
Two hearts drew near, though poles apart,
As love burned thru shell of outer man.
As the flake and crust gave way to love
Of God, and for maiden, gentle and fair,
Their eyes met often ‘neath blue skies above
The smithy’s shop, and showed their care
For each other, until that day when his love
Moved him to ask her his life to share.
She said yes, so, joining hearts and hands,
And with God’s love and blessing they began life
Anew. Daily they prayed they might understand
Better how to live as husband and wife.
Soon God added to home little hands
And hearts to love and share words of life.
His hands, so big and strong,
When needed to correct a wrong,
Were yet soft and tender like his heart,
When touched in sorrow as loved ones part.
And when in joy he touched the strings
Of his violin, all the family sings.
Grandfather. A loving example of his beautiful poetry.
