Notes for GEORGE HERZOG:
Immigrated to America from Germany in 1860 and stayed with
brother, Charles.
He served in the Civil War, after he had immigrated to America. He was a Corporal in the Regimented Calvary Co. B., out of New York. His papers state that he enlisted January 2, 1864. I do believe that the last time he enlisted was the second time and I am still working on that.
He states the following in his Claim for Pension:
I was discharged from the service in 1865. At Albany, New York, I then went to Purely, TN, first. Afterwards, to Camden, near Bethel, TN. I remained there some over seven years. After that time, I went to California, where my brother and nephew are residents.
People in general, at the time, I lived in TN, where there were a great deal Prejudiced against Union soldiers. Consequently, after I came away from that State, I have never corresponded with any person from there, nor do I know of any one that could or would testify in my behalf. After my arrival in CA, I lived with my brother in Yreka for some time. Afterwards, I made residence on Bogus Creek, 22 miles north of Yreka and been living there ever since.
Some of the oldest settlers that lived on Bogus for the first three years of any residence there, and could testify to me, have left here years ago and their whereabouts is unknown to me at present.
I do not know of any names of officers, surgeons since discharge who would be able to Testify.
Signed,
George Herzog
